Survival Tip #459.9

There are a large variety of edible plants coming up this time of year. Just outside your door you will find young dandelion greens, clover, poke, wild carrot, wild garlic, chickweed and many others that are at their freshest and tastiest. Dine early and often to get the best nutrients as the summer months tend to dry things out. Soon will come the wild asparagus and highly tasty morel mushrooms. Get a good book (Petersons) to identify the local varieties, and be safe. Most can be eaten right off the ground, but others, such as the beautiful and tasty Marsh Marigold, should only be eaten after boiling to expel poisonous glucoside. Don’t be afraid, eating off the ground has sustained the biomass since the beginning, and I have met some of my best friends down there. I like to take a pinch or two of fresh greenies throughout the day to keep my spirits and energy up. You will soon get used to that strong, bitter taste – it’s just real food talking. Their weeds are your salad.
